Site Setup

Remember Rule #1

1. Work in one folder for each project.

Think of your top project as this entire class - EDUC 565. This means you should create a folder called 565. Within that 565 folder, you will create folders for each project. There are no limits as to how many folders you can have, or how those folders are nested (one placed in another).

Here is what I want your folder structure to look like

The top folder (the one above the 565 folder) is yours to use as you like. The Homepages server is there for you to create a web presence for yourself. You can look at my top level page to see how I have used it.

Each folder will have a main document that will be named DEFAULT.HTM or DEFAULT.ASP (we will learn about ASP later). If needed, you may also choose to create folders inside your assignment folders. This is a handy way of organizing projects that have lots of files. I did this with my picture index files in assignment #5. I had 17 picture files and each had a "thumbnail" version (34 pictures in all), so I placed all those picture files in one folder, under the assignment #5 folder.

You will often see images stored in a separate folder, just to make them easier to keep organized. Check to see if your Homepages account on the new server already has a folder called images. This folder is pre-created as a place to store your pictures. You don't have to use it, but you can if you wish.

For the rest of the course, create a folder for each new assignment. The folder name should be the word assignment followed by the assignment number. For assignment #5, create a folder called assignment05. Remember that file and folder names should not contain spaces. The folder layout of your full site should look something like below (the "pictures" folder is optional).
